Album Review: Paul Oakenfold – Perfecto Las Vegas
Paul Oakenfold’s Perfecto Las Vegas is made up of 2 CDs that in my opinion represent a 2 day weekend in Las Vegas. No matter where you are when you listen to this, you will automatically be transported to the Sin City every hedonist calls home, Las Vegas…all while bumping your head and tapping your feet. Of course if you’re in a more appropriate atmosphere, you will without a doubt move to the groove from start to finish.
You just landed in Vegas, relaxed, not quite sure what the next few hours have in store for you and completely overwhelmed by the amount of sexiness this city exudes. The first track by Hibernate called ‘Left Alone’ puts that feeling into sound. A nice groovy chilled out sexy track. I’m thinking to myself, “this is nice, but I’m in Vegas…what’s next?”. Like Sin City, Paul Oakenfold doesn’t let you chill out for too long, there’s too much to do and so little time to do it that Torin Schmitt’s remix of ‘Awaken’ by The Fraction really starts to get you moving. The next few tracks become deeper and more head banging. You couldn’t possibly think Paul Oakenfold would name this album Perfecto LAS VEGAS and not deliver track after track of pure madness. With bangers like ‘Slack Jaw’ by Joey Modus & Kazell and ‘Carousel’ by Elucidate, Oakenfold really gets your blood rushing to the point where you take a minute and ask yourself a question that every newcomer in Vegas asks him/herself at one point or another, “can my body deal with this much stimulation?”. Don’t you worry your feeble little hearts because Oakenfold drops Deluna’s remix of ‘Eivissa’ by Amine Edge & Alexis Dante just when you need a breather. Don’t get too comfortable though, you are in Las Vegas after all and if you wanted to sit, relax, and twirl the mini umbrella in your Pina Colada while listening to some Louis Armstrong you could have rented a studio apartment in Boca Raton, Florida.
CD2 is filled with some incredible tunes. The Piano Slam mix of ‘Happy Monkey’ by King of the Berry, Robert Vadney’s Blamed remix of ‘Sleeping Satellite’ by Jan Johnston, ‘Becoming You’ by Trenix, and ‘Buenos Aires’ by the man of the hour himself, Paul Oakenfold.
This album doesn’t give you a real chance to come down from the musical trip Oakenfold sends you on, and that’s the way it should be.
To be honest, even though Paul Oakenfold was one of the reasons I got turned on to Electronic music in the first place, I haven’t been following his work too much these past few years. Now that I gave Perfecto Las Vegas a full listen, I can proudly say that he’s one of the few top DJs in the world that stayed true to his roots, and for that, I’m so back on the Oakie bandwagon, I might as well be the driver.
I highly recommend this album to anyone with real taste in real music, it will take you to Vegas and back for less than the price of a drink at Body English.
